$43M Initiative to study Alzheimer's and brain aging

In November, the American Heart Association and the Frontiers Group announced awardees of the American Heart Association-Allen Initiative in Brain Health and Cognitive Impairment. Three interdisciplinary teams will merge research on the brain and vascular system to better understand — and ultimately treat — age-related brain disorders.

Active genetics demonstrated in mammals for the first time

Researchers are using CRISPR-based gene editing to change how genes are inherited, the first demonstration of its kind in mammals. The UC San Diego team, including Allen Distinguished Investigator Ethan Bier, Ph.D., published a study in Nature on the method earlier this month.
